Frequently Asked Questions

Car Audio Subwoofers

  • This is the first crossroad for every buyer:

    • Active (Powered): The amplifier is built directly into the subwoofer enclosure. These are compact, easier to install, and great for saving space (like under a seat).
    • Passive: This is just the speaker in a box. It requires an external, aftermarket amplifier to provide power. This setup is for those who want maximum volume and customization.
  • Size affects the "character" of the bass more than just the volume:

    • 8" or 10": These are "faster" and more responsive. They excel at tight, punchy bass found in rock, metal, or country. They also take up less trunk space.
    • 12" or 15": These move more air and can hit lower frequencies. If you listen to Hip-Hop, EDM, or cinematic scores and want to feel the vibration, these are the better choice.
  • The enclosure (the box) is just as important as the speaker itself:

    • Sealed Enclosure: An airtight box. It provides the most accurate and tight bass. If you want your music to sound exactly as the artist intended, go sealed.
    • Ported (Vented) Enclosure: A box with a port (vent) to redirect sound from the back of the cone. It is significantly louder and more efficient, making it ideal for "head-turning" bass.
  • You might have seen lights dimming when a bass hit occurs.

    • A capacitor acts as a small battery reserve to help with those quick hits.
    • Reality Check: If your lights are dimming significantly, a capacitor is often just a "band-aid." You likely need a "Big 3" wiring upgrade or a higher-output alternator to actually solve the power drain.
  • Standard speakers have one voice coil (two terminals). DVC subwoofers have two separate coils, each with its own set of terminals.

    • The Benefit: It gives you more wiring flexibility. You can wire them in parallel or series to match the Ohm load your amplifier requires (e.g., dropping to 1 ohm for maximum power or staying at 4 ohms for stability).
  • Yes, but you will need a Line Output Converter (LOC). This device taps into your existing rear speaker wires and converts that signal into an RCA connection that your subwoofer's amplifier can understand.

  • To match a car subwoofer with an amplifier, you must align the RMS power ratings and the impedance (Ohms). Start by looking at the subwoofer’s RMS rating—not the "peak" or "max" power—and find an amplifier that can provide 75% to 150% of that wattage for a clean, undistorted signal.

Next, you must ensure the amplifier is stable at the subwoofer's final impedance; for example, if you have a Dual 4 ohms subwoofer wired in parallel to 2 ohms, you need an amplifier that explicitly lists its power output at a 2 ohms load. Ideally, choose a Class D monoblock amplifier, as these are specifically designed to handle low-frequency demands efficiently while providing the necessary tuning controls, like a subsonic filter, to protect your sub from over-excursion.

What are the key benefits of a high quality Car Subwoofer?

Enhanced Bass Response: This is the most significant benefit. Car subwoofers are designed to reproduce low-frequency sounds (bass) that factory car speakers typically lack. A high quality subwoofer adds depth, power, and richness to your music, making the listening experience more immersive and enjoyable. Adding a car amplifier will help maximize the punch of subwoofers even more.

Improved Sound Quality: Good subwoofers complement your entire car audio sound system, not just the bass. They reproduce low frequencies accurately without distortion, creating a more balanced and overall clear soundscape.

Greater Listening Pleasure: With deeper bass and improved sound quality, you'll appreciate the full range of your music genres, from bass-heavy electronic music to complex classical pieces. Subtle details and nuances become more apparent, making listening more engaging.
